Remember the movie Jaws?? I don’t remember every detail of that movie, but I DO remember being scared because of how huge those sharks were, and how they hunted down and ate people. Don’t we just love Hollywood for that? Ha! That movie really scarred me. From that point on, I never swam in the ocean. I don’t want to be eaten by a shark, period!

Fast forward to 2015 in North Shore, Hawaii, on a beautiful morning. I developed this blog to inspire people to try things that they may be afraid of, including facing their fear of sharks. Because I have to practice what I preach, I decided to go swim with sharks. Now, most people would choose swimming with sharks while you’re in a cage. I chose to take it to another level and decided to swim with sharks…in OPEN WATER, NO CAGE! Holy cow, I was terrified at the thought, but I had to do it (call me crazy!). Of course, I dragged my husband along and he’s always been deathly afraid of them too. I was in good company.

One Ocean Diving did such a tour. This company’s goal is to educate the public about sharks, and how they are NOT dangerous. They are endangered animals. It’s an educational tour (I’m all for education!) and they’ve done a little over a decade of research on these creatures. Ocean Ramsey and Juan Oliphant are the two that run the show. Needless to say, it was life changing. Jaws? Jaws, who? Yes, ladies and gents! It was the dive of a lifetime and we wished it lasted all day. Up until that tour, my husband and I had nightmares every night about being eaten alive. Once our tour guide got into the water, we jumped right in (without hesitation), and was suddenly surrounded and greeted by 20 or more of these beautiful creatures. We saw sandbar sharks and hammerheads! By the end of the tour, we missed hanging out with the sharks and wanted one as a pet.

So what did we learn? Sharks are our friends! This tour truly changed our perception about these creatures. We definitely have a new found respect for them.

We are grateful for One Ocean Diving and Juan for this magical shark diving experience. We WILL be back. Thank you!
